"A Historic Inn in Martinsburg West Virginia"..

Walk to downtown shops, restaurants, and historic sites from this elegant mansion, one of the most historic homes in our area. The original buildings (which still stand) were part of a fortified complex known as Mendenhall's Fort. George Washington garrisoned troops here during the French & Indian War 250 years ago. Being a millwright, John Mendenhall supplied British General Braddock's army with grain and later also supplied Washington's Revolutionary War Army. In 1761, during his first run for public office (the Virginia House of Burgesses), Washington attended a wedding on the site. The house was a hospital during the Civil War. Aspen Hall's outstanding architecture has earned it the distinction of being "one of the finest Georgian period homes in the United States". It is on the National Historic Register. Many of the original features of the 22-room house remain; for example, the 13 x 38 foot grand hall still has its original 40 inch board and batten doors with their large strap hinges. Built of native limestone, Aspen Hall is on seven creekside acres. The shared sitting room is equipped with a microwave and a refrigerator. Fresh coffee, juice, pastry, and cereals are provided each morning. Local attractions include the Roundhouse, Apollo Theatre, Harpers Ferry NHP, Berkeley Springs, Shepherdstown, Antietam Battlefield, Charles Town Races & slots, and the C&O Canal NHP. Guests can refresh their spirits by strolling Aspen Hall's grounds while listening to the peaceful babbling of the Tuscarora Creek as it flows under the footbridge. Full body Swedish relaxation massage is available by appt with the resident Licensed Massage Therapist..
